Birth Control is the practice of preventing
conception for the purpose of limiting the
number of births; also called contraception
and family planning. The concept of birth
control was first devised in the UK where the
problems of overpopulation were brought to
light. The first birth control clinic was
opened in the US in 1916. On an international
level, birth control is led by the
International Planned Parenthood Federation
which was founded in 1952. In many countries
such as Japan and Sweden the government
provides birth control assistance to its
people in order to limit the population
growth. Other contraceptive methods include,
for males, withdrawal before ejaculation,
use of a condom placed over the penis, or
sterilization by VASECTOMY. Contraception
for females include the precoital use of
spermicidal vaginal foam or jelly, use of a
diaphragm, which is a cup-shaped device
inserted into the vagina before intercourse
and prevents sperm from traveling to the egg,
use of an INTRAUTERINE_DEVICE, and "the pill"
( see ORAL_CONTRACEPTIVE ).
Surgical sterilization for women includes
tubal ligation, which is the severing or
sealing of the Fallopian tubes. In the early
1990's a new contraceptive was introduced to
the market, a female version of the condom.
